The book opens with the protagonist, Leopold Plotkin, slouching despondently at the Accused’s Table in the Low Court of Criminal Transgressions. He and his attorney are waiting for the Republic’s Prosecutor General to launch the government’s Opening Rant against him. Plotkin is anxious. The Prosecutor General and his minions are confident. The spectators are excited. A Bailiff trundles into the Courtroom Well. The Prosecutor General rises. The much-anticipated trial begins.
